Combining a love for art and film, Lâle has been creating a series moving image. The first three videos, which are woven together to create intersecting narratives, were exhibited in the International Women's Day WOMXN exhibition at Mothership Studios in Marrickville, March, 2021. Profits were donated to Samaritan House and Women's Family Service.
‘I believe in the future resolution of these two states — outwardly so contradictory — which are dream and reality, into a sort of absolute reality, a surreality.’ ~André Breton — surrealist manifesto |
Artist statement:
In alignment with ideas of surrealism this work is an illumination of the subconscious. Seemingly mundane objects may evoke strange and beautiful experiences. Three women appear isolated in their own worlds, perhaps like different interpretations of Breton’s Nadja — an enigmatic and unpredictable young woman. Or maybe they speak to Beckett’s Waiting For Godot — happenings in time and space, an obscure contemplation of existence or the irrationality of life. During the bizzaro world of 2020 I listened to a few songs on repeat. One of these was Fratres for strings and percussion by Avro Pärt. It is a piece of music that demands a trip down the rabbit hole within, and so I thought it perfect to accompany the atmospheric sounds of wind and waves. I decided to leave some moments where I speak to the subject, offering direction of performance. It seemed to merge states of play — the call and the response. During the editing process the three worlds organically intercepted, so the videos should be viewed in order. Mostly this work is an ode to the ridiculous, and to peculiarity and wonder.
